Native to NZ the Takahe is a flightless bird. Previously thought to be extinct, they were rediscovered in the Murchison Mountains, near Lake Te Anau, in 1948. They have since been the focus of a concerted breeding and protection effort. The population is around 380 birds. They are a large stocky bird, up to 63cm tall and up to 2.7kgs. They are also noisy and make sounds ranging from a shriek to a muted woomph when threatened!
